BCS Math & Mental Ability 2025: Score Full Marks in 30 Days
The most practical guide to cracking BCS Mathematics and Mental Ability — 30 marks that most candidates leave on the table.
🧠
BCS Mathematics (15 marks) and Mental Ability (15 marks) together carry 30 marks — yet most candidates spend 80% of their time on Bangla and Bangladesh Affairs and score only 14–16 here. The truth is that these 30 marks are the easiest full marks available in the entire preliminary paper — if you prepare the right way.

📋 BCS Mathematics Topic Breakdown
| Topic | Marks | Difficulty | Key Formula |
| Percentage & Profit-Loss | 3–4 | Easy | Profit% = (Profit/CP)×100 |
| Ratio & Proportion | 2–3 | Easy | If a:b = c:d then ad = bc |
| Simple & Compound Interest | 2–3 | Moderate | CI = P(1+r/n)^nt − P |
| Speed, Distance & Time | 2 | Easy | D = S × T |
| Algebra (Basic) | 2 | Moderate | a²−b² = (a+b)(a−b) |
| Geometry & Mensuration | 2 | Moderate | Area of circle = πr² |
| Number System & LCM/HCF | 1–2 | Easy | HCF × LCM = Product of two numbers |
🧠 Mental Ability: The 6 Question Types
Series
Number series — find the pattern and next number. Example: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, __ (Answer: 42 — differences are 4, 6, 8, 10, 12). Always find the difference between consecutive terms first, then look for a pattern in the differences.
Analogy
Relationship-based pairing. Example: "Book : Library :: Painting : __" (Gallery). Identify the relationship type first: part-whole, tool-use, product-source, synonym. BCS analogies are rarely tricky — identify the obvious relationship and apply it.
Coding/Decoding
Alphabetical or numerical code patterns. Example: If CAT = 24, DOG = 26, then BUS = ? (count letter positions: B=2, U=21, S=19; sum=42). Always check: is it letter position? Reverse alphabet? Letter substitution? +1 or −1 shift?
Blood Relations
Family relationship deduction. Draw a family tree for each question rather than working in your head. BCS blood relation questions are 2–3 steps at most. Common trick: "A is B's brother's only sister" — A must be the sister, and there is only one sister.
Directions
Spatial orientation after a series of turns. Always draw the path on paper — never solve in your head. Mark N/S/E/W at the start. Right turn = clockwise, Left turn = anticlockwise. Count final displacement from origin.
Logical Deduction
Syllogism — all/some/no type statements. Example: All cats are animals. Some animals are dogs. Conclusion: Some cats are dogs? (Invalid — does not follow). Use Venn diagram method for every syllogism — it is faster and more reliable than verbal reasoning.
💡
30-Day Math + Mental Plan: Week 1 — Percentage, ratio, profit-loss + Series and Analogy. Week 2 — Interest, speed-distance + Coding and Blood relations. Week 3 — Geometry, algebra + Directions and Syllogisms. Week 4 — Full mixed mock + previous BCS Math/Mental papers. Solve 25 questions daily from each category. This is enough to score 26–30 out of 30.
✅ Math Exam Technique
- Attempt Math first — it is time-predictable
- Show workings even in MCQ (avoid careless errors)
- Skip and return — do not get stuck
- Double-check percentage and ratio answers
- Memorise key squares: 12²=144 through 25²=625
❌ Mental Ability Mistakes
- Solving directions or blood relations in your head
- Not drawing a diagram for series questions
- Misreading "odd one out" questions (there is usually one clearly correct answer)
- Spending over 60 seconds on any single question
- Guessing when 0.5 marks are deducted per wrong answer
